What is the Varroa Mite?

The varroa mite, scientifically known as Varroa destructor, is a parasitic mite that targets honey bees. These tiny mites attach themselves to both adult bees and developing bee larvae, feeding on the bees' hemolymph (blood) and weakening their immune systems. If left unchecked, varroa mites can decimate a bee colony, leading to significant losses for beekeepers. To put this into proportions, it is as if we would carry a basketball size parasite on our body.
